    Fishing and Hunting

December 16, 2019 Posted by FGCCadmin Fishing, Hiking 4 Comments

Several fishing and hunting areas are close to Fancy Gap Cabins and Campground. More and more of our guests are staying with us and enjoying our proximity to wildlife areas, lakes and creeks.

    Crooked Creek

Located in Woodlawn, which is between 1-77 and Galax, Crooked Creek Wildlife Area offers fee fishing in six miles of regularly stocked trout streams. The Wildlife Management Area also has over 1,700 acres of forest and fields that are good for hiking, hunting, and wildlife viewing.

To reach Crooked Creek Fee Fishing Area, from FGCC, take I-77 north to exit 14. Go left off the exit onto Rt 58 and drive 3.8 miles to Forest Oak Road/Rt 620. The turn is rigth before Harmon’s Western Outlet. Follow Rt 620 until you reach the parking lot and check-in area of Crooked Creek. The road is a two-lane, windy, country road that switches from paved to gravel as you get closer to the fishing area.

    Stewart’s Creak

Stewart’s Creek Wildlife Management Area is just a few miles away from the campground off the Blue Ridge Parkway. You can hike, fish or hunt in over a thousand acres of pristine woodlands complete with mountain streams and wildflowers.

To hike, fish or hunt in either of the Wildlife Management Areas, the correct license and/or permit from the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries is required.

    Lovill Creek

Lovill Creek Lake Recreation Area is another fishing location that is in Cana, just down the mountain from the campground on Highway 52. It is a 55-acre lake suited best for kayaks or canoes. Small boats with electric motors are allowed as well.

Other Places to Fish Near Us

If you’re interested in learning more about places to fish, other Carroll County options are Laurel Fork Creek, Little Reed Island Creek and Chestnut Creek. In neighboring Grayson County, Big Wilson Creek, Middle Fox Creek, Elk Creek, Helton Creek and Hales Lake are additional choices.

Several of these fishing spots are stocked. Fish species in the area include trout, small-mouth bass, muskie, catfish, crappie, redeyes and bluegills. There are limits to how many fish you can catch, and the approrpriate licenses are required.

The $10 per pet per night is only for the motel and cabins. We don’t have pet fees for the RV or tent sites.
