Hiking

December 4, 2019 Posted by FGCCadmin Hiking

Not many business owners encourage their guests to take a hike, but we do.

You can start with the walking trails on the campground or stroll to the Granite Quarry Overlook just down the Blue Ridge Parkway from us. The country road on the other side of the BRP from the campground makes for a nice stroll as well. From Memorial Day to November, the Blue Ridge Music Center, 10 miles south of us on the BRP, has the High Meadow Trail and the Fisher Peak Loop as well as afternoon concerts by local musicians and weekend concerts featuring top artists.

Walking/Hiking Trails

Other near by hiking/walking locals are:

Beaver Dam Trails, Hillsville

Lovill’s Creek Lake Recreation Area, Cana

Peach Bottom/Power House Falls, Independence

Emily B. Taylor Greenway, Mt. Airy.

Hiking Areas

For those who want more of a challenge, the 280-acre Devil’s Den Nature Preserve is just a few miles away from the campground off Old Appalachian Trail. If you’re successful, you’ll find a cave formation to explore at the end of the trail.

Rocky Knob (milepost 167) or Cumberland Knob (milepost 217.5) are recreation areas that both have easy to strenuous trails and views that are worth the walk. Buffalo Mountain Natural Area Preserve is close to Rocky Knob. Many of our guests recommend the hike for the panoramic views at the top.

Read aboout our family’s fantastic day at Buffalo Mountain. We also enjoyed a day trip down the Blue Ridge Parkway to Doughton Recreation Area (NC). Beautiful views all the way and some hiking trails we’re anxious to try again.

More Options

Other options for hiking include:

New River Trail State Park

Grayson Highlands State Park

Matthews State Forest

Fairy Stone State Park

Crystal Springs Recreation Area

Pilot Mountain State Park (NC)

Stone Mountain State Park (NC)
