Mt. Airy, NC is the hometown of actor and comedian Andy Griffith. The Mt. Airy of Griffith’s youth inspired Mayberry, the fictional town at the center of the Andy Griffith Show. The TV comedy originally aired from 1960 to 1968, but re-runs have kept it a family favorite. Every September, Mt. Airy celebrates everything Andy Griffith during Mayberry Days.
To visit Mt. Airy, take the BRP north to Highway 52 South. On your way down the mountain, stop at the antique, collectible and produce shops as you pass through Cana. Once you’re in Mt. Airy the road name changes to Andy Griffith Parkway. Follow the signs to downtown where you can visit the Andy Griffith Museum, tour the town in a 1960s police car and enjoy the many shops and restaurants. If you visit between October 9-13, 2020, plan to take in the Autumn Leaves Festival.
