Updated September 18, 2023 – We woke up this morning and threw the shorts aside. The cool weather made us dig out our boots and pull on our jeans. The temperatures also mean that the reds of fall leaves and oranges of pumpkin patches will soon be here along with fun, fall, family activities. We’ve updated our list of fall festivities near us in Southwest Virginia. Make your plans and remember to book a stay in one of our motel rooms, RV sites, camping cabins or tent sites.
Appalachian Ol’ Timey Day
Saturday, September 23 from 11 am to 5 pm immerse yourself in the first Appalachian Ol’ Timey Day. Blue grass and gospel music, crafts, demonstrations, storytelling and good food are just a few of the day’s highlights. Click to read more.
17th Annual Sunflower Maze in Ararat, VA
September 23 to November 4, Sunday through Friday 1 pm to 7 pm and Saturday 10 am to 8 pm
Doe Run Farm at 214 Marigold Lane in nearby Ararat hosts the 17th Annual Sunflower Maze and festival. The sunflower maze is only the beginning of the fun. Doe Run has a bounce pad, apple launcher, pumpkin bowling, swings, slide, corn hole and a pick-your-own sunflower field. There is also fresh produce, pumpkins, fall decorations, apple pies, peanut butter delight, t-shirts, snacks and drinks. Mayberry Days in Mt. Airy
Mt. Airy, NC, just down the mountain on Highway 52 from Fancy Gap Cabins and Campground, is holding its annual Mayberry Days from September 18 to 24. Mt. Airy was Andy Griffith’s hometown and the inspiration for Mayberry. The festival honors the The Andy Griffith Show with films, a comedy show, special guests, music, art, autograph sessions, contests, a parade and more. Get all of the details at the festival website.
Autumn Leaves Festival in Mt. Airy
Following Mayberry Days, Mt. Airy hosts the Autumn Leaves Festival from October 13 to 15. A fall favorite among our guests, food, arts, crafts, music and fun fill downtown. Click to learn more.
Living History and Music in Galax, VA
Matthews Living History Farm at 476 White Pine Rd, Galax, VA, has a full calendar of events in September and October. Those looking for fun ways to celebrate fall, can visit their website for the details about their tours, demonstrations, pumpkin carving and other events.

Chili Shoot Out in Hillsville, VA
October 14 is the 8th annual Hillsville Chili Shoot Out day to be in the town of Hillsville, about ten miles north of us on Highway 52. The event begins at 1 pm with wrist bands available for $5 for those who dare to taste.
Hillsville Safe Halloween
Tuesday, October 31 Trick or Treat in downtown Hillsville from 5 to 8 pm. More information is available on the Hillsville website.
Farm Fun in Dobson, NC
The Farm at 769 Bray Ford Rd, Dobson NC, about a half hour south of the campground, is hosting a corn maze, pumpkin patch and family activities every weekend from mid-September through the first weekend in November. Click to learn more.
Apple Picking in the Area
As you take in the leaves, you may want to stop at a local orchard and pick some fresh apples. There are several orchards near us, including Levering, Ayers and Miss Angel’s. You do need to call ahead to schedule a time to pick.
