Things to Do in Southwest Virginia

March 1, 2021 Posted by FGCCadmin Family Fun, Itinerary, Outdoors No Comments

Things to do in Southwest Virginia are plentiful from wineries to kayaking to hiking. A sure bet for a good time are the animal attractions. Three of the best- Cobb Hill Alpaca Farm, Foster Falls Horseback Riding and Fort Chiswell Animal Park- are less than forty-five minutes from Fancy Gap Cabins and Campground.

Cobb Hill Alpaca Farm

Cobb Hill Alpaca farm is an up close and person al experience. Call ahead for an appointment. The benefit of meeting the farm owners by appointment is that you receive one-on-one time with them and their herd of alpacas. They can tell you all there is to know about these beautiful animals and about each animal’s personality. Also, enjoy the chickens roaming around the farm as well as bee hives. Since your visit is free, make sure to stop in the store. You will find that perfect gift made from alpaca fur whether its ear warmers or socks. Take a look at the Cobb Hill website to learn more.

Foster Falls Guided Trail Rides

Foster Falls is a recreation area that is part of Virginia State Parks. The New River and the New River Trail run right through the area. Paddle, picnic, hike, camp (primitivetent sites only) and rent a horse to go for a guided trail ride. The livery is right there on site. Prices range from $20 to $35. Children under ten are $5. Learn more.

Fort Chiswell Animal Park

Fort Chiswell Animal Park is a private zoo. Visitors ride through the farm on a bus to see and feed the animals. Camels, antelopes, bison, zebras and water buffalo are examples of the animals you see along the narrated tour. Walk through the petting zoo to see even more animals such as fallow deer, monkeys, parrots and barn yard favorites like pygmy goats. Don’t forget to visit Cheeto the Giraffe. Adults are $12, and children three to 12 are $10. Children two and under are free. Seniors and military personnel (must show a military ID) receive a $1 discount.  The zoo plans to open up April 1, 2021. Check their website for details.
