Where can we go swimming near Fancy Gap? During the summer, this is one of the most frequently asked questions we get. The options closest to Fancy Gap Cabins and Campground are:

The New River

We are not too far, maybe a half hour, from the New River. There are not dedicated swimming areas that we’re aware of, but you can find places to wade in, get wet and cool off. The New River Trail State Park is accessible in Galax, VA, about 13 miles west of Fancy Gap. The trail follows the New River for 57 miles and is fairly flat and well maintained.

Another way to enjoy the New River is to tube, kayak or paddle. To schedule a trip, contact New River Outdoor Adventures.

Driving north on I-77 for no more than a half hour, you’ll see signs for Shot Tower State Park and Foster Falls. Foster Falls, especially, presents an opportunity to cool off in the river as well as walk, hike and paddle . Lovill’s Creek Lake Recreation Area

Down the mountian from us off Highway 52 is Lovill’s Creek. It’s a small lake with a picnic area. You can get in and splash around, throw in a line and, if you have a canoe or kayak, paddle a bit. Read our full post on Lovill’s Creek.

Splash Pad

Carroll County opened a splash pad at their recreation center at 29 Ballpark Drive in Woodlawn, VA. The splash pad is close to I-77 near exit 14. It is free for children of all ages to enjoy.

Carroll County Wellness Center

If swimming near Fancy Gap in a lake or river doesn’t suit then visit the Carroll County Wellness Center. A day pass is $10. The pass grants access to the pool, gym, walking track, basket ball court and fitness classes. The pool has lanes for laps and an open area for free swim. There is a swim team. So, remember to call ahead and make sure your visit doesn’t coincide with swim practice. The Wellness Center is a great facility and worth a visit for a work out or a dip in the pool.
